Validating Mobile IoT Services and Capacity Planning

Demand for IoT devices in the market keeps on increasing day by day. Increasing number of IoT devices and Edge Routers use a cellular connection for their back end connectivity. Depending on the use cases, these devices use Cat-M1 or Cat-NB1 (NB-IoT) as the communication standard. Expectations from mobile network operators to support IoT services are a critical factor for their future business sustainability.

IoT technologies such as NB-IoT and Cat-M1 rollouts need to meet the massive demand from B2B or B2C markets. Usually, the readiness testing validates the ability of handling large number of messaging by the cellular network, as well as the IoT Message Hub integrated to the network. XGP helped in such a massive rollout of IoT services in the European region by a leading telecommunication provider. XGP enabled the MNO to ensure the performance, quality, and long-term availability of their IoT services.

Due to the modular technology of the XG devices we were able to simulate massive concurrent connections for the load testing within a short lead time. This helped the MNO to discover bottlenecks in the network as well as the message broker, leading into a remediation and optimization phase. Finally, XGP assured that their infrastructure is able to handle thousands of concurrent messages at a given time by stress testing (load testing).

Further XGP is able to reasonably emulate IoT device communication and measure power consumption of the data sessions under different network conditions. This also helped optimising the network in certain areas where industrial IoT devices were heavily deployed.
